The Legality of Online Gambling in the US
The legality of online gambling in the US was long contested. Until recently, the Wire Act of 1961, the anti-racketeering law that was drafted in 1961, applied to gambling on land. Today, however, digital wagering is considered legal, and the Act isn’t applicable to it. The Department of Justice in 2011 allowed states to pass legislation allowing online gambling, and in December 2018 the US Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting. In the meantime, the Department of Justice has continued to study the legality of online betting in the United States.
To play online, you will need a computer and internet access. Many websites are designed to be compatible with PCs running Windows. Slowly, however, these websites have added support for Mac computers, making them compatible with other platforms. In addition, online gambling is compatible with laptops and smartphones. A good rule of thumb for players is to check where the website is licensed before entering any personal information. Once you’ve made sure the website is legitimate, you can enjoy gambling without worry.
While online gambling is widely available, not all states have legalized it. In fact, it is illegal in all but a few states. In the United States, gambling is legal in all but Hawaii and Utah. In Hawaii, gambling is not legal due to the Mormon population, which has a negative impact on family relationships. In Idaho, there are no laws prohibiting online gambling. But you should always consider your location when making a decision to gamble online.
