The basic idea is that players compete for the highest hand and share the pot. The player with the highest ranking hand is the winner. The pot is the aggregate of all the bets made by all the players in a single deal. The game can be won by the best hand, a bluff, or a combination of the two.

There are several forms of poker, each with its own rules. The most common form is the community card game, which has common betting rounds and a ranking system for the hands. There are variations on this game, including lowball, five-card stud, seven-card stud, and draw poker.

A pot-limit game has a limit on how much a bettor can raise. Usually the maximum amount is twice the amount in the final betting interval. If a player has exposed pairs, a higher limit will be applied.

In some variants, the blinds are forced bets. The blinds ensure that there is action on every hand. If there were no blinds, poker would become boring. The minimum bettor in the first betting interval is called the “first bettor” or the “first player”.

The betting interval starts with a player’s turn. In a game of five cards, the player to the immediate left of the dealer button gets the first card.
